About the Event

Join us as we celebrate the opening of Merik Goma's exhibition, My Heart is Light in the Void. Event is free but registration is required.  Please register today!

Merik Goma is the inaugural Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence at the Amistad Center for Art & Culture. He spent 18 months immersed in the Amistad Center’s art and artifacts and, through this exploration of the permanent collection, found inspiration for the series My Heart is Light in the Void.

A unique storyteller, Goma carefully places objects and human models in hand constructed tableaux. Embracing cinematic concepts of lighting, his work invites the viewer to imagine the contexts in which people of color are both visible and invisible and the resulting parallels between dark and light.

My Heart is Light in the Void, opens at The Amistad Center for Art & Culture on February 9, 2023, and runs through July 2, 2023.

Made possible through a generous grant from The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts  Foundation. The Joyce C. Willis residency program was designed to serve as a catalyst  to help Black artists excel in their careers and promote racial equity in the arts.
