Joyce C. Willis
Artist in Residence (apply below)
The Amistad Center for Art & Culture looks to celebrate the African Diaspora by identifying Black visual artists of exceptional talent and naming one as the inaugural Joyce C. Willis artist in residence. This eighteen (18) month program will provide the resources and support to allow an emerging or mid-career visual artist the opportunity to make a significant commitment to create and showcase their work.
Made possible through a generous grant from The Edward and Ann T. Roberts Foundation, this initiative will pay the artist $80,000 over the course of the residency and will include an additional budget for fabrication. The selected artist will either reside, have studied in or demonstrate a significant nexus to the State of Connecticut and must be at least twenty-five (25) years of age.
The artist will be required to create in their own studio space but will have access to the full Amistad Center collection of art and artifacts to inspire and inform their work. In addition, the artist will be expected to consult and advise with The Amistad Center’s staff on educational events, public programming and curatorial assistance necessary to help support a final exhibition presented in Fall 2022. It is expected that the residency will result in the creation of a minimum of five (5) original works for this exhibition.
